AERA-E: Counseling and Human Development Forum
The Thomas E. Cook Counseling Center invites applications for a staff
psychologist/counselor with a primary interest in college student mental
health. This is a full-time professional faculty appointment.
The Cook Counseling Center provides mental health services to the
student community of Virginia Tech. The Staff Psychologist/Counselor
works with a multidisciplinary staff of psychologists, counselors,
psychiatrist, nurse practitioners, psychology interns, and practicum
students to deliver services that maintain the highest standards of
professional and ethical care. The Staff Psychologist/Counselor has
responsibility for the following: provide individual services to
students including initial assessment, diagnosis, and determination of
treatment needs; conduct on-going individual, couples, and group
psychotherapy with students; utilize appropriate psychometric
assessments as needed during evaluations; conduct crisis interventions
as needed during after-hours emergency on-call rotation; supervise
pre-doctoral interns in APA-approved site as well as practicum students;
provide outreach services to the university community. For additional

Requirements: Ph.D./Psy.D. in Counseling/Clinical from APA-approved
program with APA-approved internship (ABD students may be considered) ;
Ph.D., Ed.D., or D.S.W. in Counselor Education, Marriage and Family
Therapy, Social work. Licensure or license eligible in Commonwealth of
Virginia (licensure required within two years of hire). Interest and
experience providing services to a multicultural population. Preferred
qualifications: interest in and/or experience working with one or more
of the following populations: multicultural students, international
students, and/or LGBTQ students; interest and experience with crisis
intervention, substance abuse, and eating disorders; experience in a
higher education setting.

Duties:
· In conjunction with counseling center management team, provide
vision and leadership for all areas of responsibility of the center.
· Provide leadership in the absence of the Director.
· Oversee research initiatives within the Center and with
research consortiums including the Center for the Study of College
Student Mental Health.
· Share responsibility for production of annual reports, policy
and procedure manual, assessment initiatives, and Center publications.
· Coordinate internal committee assignments and reporting.
· Oversee website content and design.
· Serve on divisional and university committees as needed.
· Provide liaison relationship to student affairs departments
and to academic areas of the university.
· Provide individual and group treatment to undergraduate and
graduate students.
· Participate in outreach and education efforts within the
university.
Education: Ph.D. in Counseling or Clinical Psychology (or
terminal degree in a related mental health discipline).
Licensed or license-eligible in the
Commonwealth of Virginia
· Significant experience in college student mental health, with
progressive responsibility for counseling operations.
· Interest and experience in counseling center administration.
· Experience in supervision of classified staff members,
trainees, and professional staff members.
· Commitment to development of multicultural competence at all
levels in the Center and to providing services to a diverse student body.
· Proven record of positive communications with university
community members including students, faculty, and staff.
· Ability to work with diverse and talented staff to enhance
professional development and work satisfaction.
· Specific interest and experience in one or more of the
following areas:

The Cook Counseling Center is located within the Division of Student
Affairs, reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Health and
Wellness. The counseling center has two locations on campus, with most
of the staff housed in McComas Hall, and a satellite clinic at East
Eggleston. Additionally, services are offered to students in the
Athletics Department, the Graduate Life Center, and the College of
Veterinary Medicine. The staff is a diverse, multidisciplinary group of
psychologists, professional counselors, psychiatrist, licensed nurse
practitioners, and classified employees. The Cook Counseling Center is
an APA-approved predoctoral training site. All full-time students pay
the student health fee and are eligible for services at the center,
including counseling and psychiatry.
The mission of the Thomas E. Cook Counseling Center is to provide
learning opportunities for students to know themselves as individuals,
to form deeper relationships with their peers, and to grow to benefit
our community and society at large. The staff of the Cook Counseling
Center provides these learning opportunities through individual and
group psychotherapy, psychiatric care, and educational programming. The
staff of the Cook Counseling Center provides support to the Virginia
Tech community through cooperative programming and consultation in our
areas of expertise. As the provider of mental health services to the
student population, the staff of the Cook Counseling Center is guided by
the highest professional and ethical standards of their professions and
