Background
The New York City Outward Bound (NYC Outward Bound) Center is a
not-for-profit educational organization dedicated to bringing Outward
Bound's approach to teaching and learning to the young people of New York
City and their public schools. With support from the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation and the New York Department of Education, NYC Outward Bound is a
partner to ten new Expeditionary Learning public middle and high schools as
part of a broader effort to establish new small schools in the City and
elsewhere around the country that emphasize demanding academics,
personalized instruction and college preparation. Expeditionary Learning
Schools (ELS) <http://www.elschools.org/> www.elschools.org is a nationally
recognized model for school transformation and creation, which features real
world learning, engaging instruction, rigorous curricula, and character
development.
Role
The Assessment and Data Manager reports to the Expeditionary Learning
Schools Regional Director for NYC. The primary responsibility of the
Assessment and Data Manager is to manage NYC Outward Bound's process for
capturing, synthesizing, analyzing and disseminating student, teacher and
school outcome data from the organization's network of Expeditionary
Learning schools as well as NYC Outward Bound programs data.
Responsibilities
. Manage the merger of specific student, teacher and school level
demographic and outcome data and NYC Outward Bound output data into our
customized database.
. Work with the database vendor to improve and maintain our
database's effectiveness as an evaluation tool.
. Work closely with school staff to analyze impacts on student
outcomes.
. Optimize the data collection process, system and tools, to enhance
their effectiveness for program evaluation.
. Ensure that necessary systems training for pertinent school and
NYC Outward Bound staff members is identified and provided in a timely
manner.
. Analyze and draw conclusions from the data that inform NYC Outward
Bound and outside audiences and contribute to understanding the impact NYC
Outward Bound programs and services have on student achievement.
Qualifications/Requirements
. Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal
skills, and ability to easily work with senior management, organization
staff, and manage outside vendors;
. Demonstrated expertise in building and maintaining professional
relationships both internally and externally;
. Proven ability to independently manage complex projects including
the ability to manage several tasks/projects simultaneously and identify
areas for process improvements;
. A proactive, self-starter accustomed to working under deadlines
with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team;
. Highly organized, detail-oriented, strategic thinker with
experience using current project management tools;
. Experience synthesizing, making meaning from, and presenting data
in various presentation formats;
. Strong facility with data information systems and databases in
general; demonstrated ability to design queries, reports and import and
export data, using complex databases (ie. Excel, Access, SPSS, STATA, SAS)
. Bachelor's degree in related field and at least two years
experience in education and/or human services data collection, or project
management desired.
. Knowledge of Department of Education student information systems
specifically (ATS, HSST, ARIS, etc) a plus.
