Director of Institutional Research and Planning

Trinity College (CT) invites applications and nominations for the position
of Director of Institutional Research and Planning.  A highly selective
coeducational institution of 2,200 students and 210 faculty, with a long
tradition of academic excellence, Trinity College's academic mission is to
"foster critical thinking, free the mind of parochialism and prejudice, and
prepare students to lead examined lives that are personally satisfying,
civically responsible, and socially useful." As a member of both the
Consortium on Financing Higher Education (COFHE) and the Higher Education
Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS), Trinity shares information with other highly
selective institutions and works with them on addressing the issues
confronting this sector of higher education. The college is located in the
city of Hartford, the capital of Connecticut, halfway between New York City
and Boston.  

Responsibilities:

The Director of Institutional Research and Planning reports directly to the
Vice President for Finance and Operations, works closely with the office of
the Dean of Faculty, and is a member of the President's Senior Staff. The
Director has primary responsibility for collecting and disseminating
consistent, accurate, and timely statistics on all aspects of the College
other than financial and for providing analysis support for the evaluation
and planning activities of the College and its various operating units,
including any reports or analyses related to reaccreditation. The Director,
along with the Budget Director, provides staff support to the college-wide
Planning and Budget Council, and works with others to provide consultation
and expertise in designing, conducting, and analyzing program and department
evaluations focused on improving quality and effectiveness. The Director
works with IT staff and other administrative offices in building and
maintaining a cross-function data warehouse and has primary responsibility
for extracting information from the warehouse for internal and external
reports and an on-line fact book. The office also conducts a regular
schedule of surveys, many through COFHE, analyzes and prepares reports on
the surveys, and maintains a comparative and trend file of survey data.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate for the position will have a minimum of a Masters'
degree in a relevant field (doctorate preferred) with at least 5 to 8 years
of relevant experience.  Must have an understanding of the objectives,
structure, and activities of residential liberal arts colleges. Proficiency
in word processing, spreadsheets, relational databases (Microsoft Access and
SQL), and statistical analysis packages such as SPSS or SAS required. Also
required is a working knowledge of and experience in applied statistical
analysis and social-science research methods including survey research and
some understanding of financial aid and financial reporting in higher
education. The incumbent will have excellent skills in written and oral
communication involving the presentation of both quantitative and
qualitative material and analyses and have the ability to work effectively
with a wide range of professionals including top administrators, trustees,
professional staff including information technology staff, and faculty.
Must be well organized, able to monitor and work on multiple and varied
projects concurrently, often with tight deadlines, while also being
meticulous and detail-oriented.
