SOCIAL JUSTICE FUNDRAISING INITIATIVE (DIV J)
AERA conference attendees are invited to participate in a social justice fundraising initiative that coincides with the conference in Philadelphia. Currently, the Philadelphia public school system faces many constraints as a result of deep and persistent budget cuts that have resulted in cuts to many programs and services designed to assist low-income and underserved youth. Many of the students do not have access to college counselors who can help them navigate the college and financial aid planning and application processes.
Several community organizations have attempted to fill the void by providing college guidance along with financial support. We invite AERA members to assist in funding scholarships for two local Philadelphia students. In partnership with Philadelphia Futures (www.philadelphiafutures.org), AERA members can donate to a scholarship fund that will financially assist these students from the college application process through the completion of a four-year degree. Our goal is to raise at least $15,000. Donations can be made in any amount; even donations ranging from $10-$25 would help in reaching our goal.
The funding we raise will create a powerful incentive for two students to stay in high school and prepare for college. Sponsorship funds cover basic college needs such as books, fees and transportation home. The funds will be split evenly between two students and will be payable over five years. Of that amount, $6,000 is disbursed directly to the student on a semester-by-semester basis.
