AERA discussion list subscribers may or may not be interested in a
recent post "Math Wars Peace Treaty? (was Letter in latest AJP)"
[Hake (2007)]. The abstract reads:

***************************************
ABSTRACT: The venerated American Journal of Physics (AJP) recently
published an acerbic editorial titled "School math books, nonsense,
and the National Science Foundation," by the *anti-reform* math
warrior David Klein. Klein champions the traditional algorithmic
drilling found by physics education researchers to be relatively
ineffective in promoting students' conceptual understanding.
Physicist John Clement suggested that AJP give the other side of the
story by publishing an editorial by a *reform* math warrior. But
instead of contributing still further to "The Needless War Between
Traditionalists and Progressives," I suggest that AJP consider
publishing an editorial proposing a "Math Wars Peace Treaty," as
proposed by Berkeley's Phil Daro (2003) and seconded by Alan
Schoenfeld in his perceptive essay "The Math Wars."
