Diversity Challenged: Evidence on the Impact of Affirmative
Action

In the courts and in referenda campaigns, affirmative action
in college and university admissions is under full-scale
attack. Affirmative action's survival may turn on a single
question whether or not the educational value of diversity is
sufficiently compelling to justify consideration of race as a
factor in deciding whom to admit to colleges and
universities. The research contained in Diversity Challenged
reviews the history of the basic argument for educational
benefits, summarizes the legal disputes, and addresses
whether diversity itself improves education.

Edited by noted Harvard researcher Gary Orfield with chapters
by former Harvard University President Neil Rudenstine,
University of Michigan Professor Sylvia Hurtado and other
notable scholars, lawyers and policymakers Diversity
