RESEARCH ASSOCIATE IN LITERACY, LANGUAGE AND CURRICULUM
Center for Children & Families,
Education Development Center
Newton, MA
Education Development Center (EDC), is a large, well
respected research and development organization that carries
out projects across the United States and throughout the
world. It is organized into centers, one of which, The Center
for Children & Families (CC&F), consists of a group of over
50 practitioners and researchers who are addressing issues
that affect young children and their families. A vital and
growing group within CC&F, lead by David Dickinson, conducts
research related to early literacy development. The core of
our work is development of and research into the
effectiveness of approaches to supporting the professional
development of preschool staff and the associated growth in
children's abilities. This work is supported by varied
governmental agencies and is increasingly coming to the
attention of those interested in enhancing the early literacy
of children from low income backgrounds. We are seeking a
person who is interested in joining us to assist on a large
currently funded project and contribute to new projects that
build on our current endeavors.
The project that the successful candidate would join is one
that is developing and evaluating an intervention that
focuses on early language and literacy that is designed to
enhance the instruction of preschool teachers who work with
low-income children. Knowledge of early language and literacy
development from a research and applied perspective is
essential. Prior experience in teaching in an early childhood
setting is highly desirable as is prior experience teaching
college level courses and/or delivering in-service training
to teachers.
The successful candidate will take on a range of
responsibilities that will be shift as the project moves
forward and will be tailored in ways that mesh with the
candidate's skills. The responsibilities may include
assisting with development of videotaped and print-based
materials used to train preschool teachers, helping develop
and support interactions that occur around our website, and
help with teacher training efforts. This person also will be
involved in helping us to communicate our work to varied
audiences including practitioners and researchers and in our
on-going research. In addition, this person will participate
in development of new proposals and may take leadership of
new projects. Skills that are essential include:
ˇ Knowledge of early language and literacy development and
classroom strategies for supporting growth,
ˇ Ability to write clearly and to relate effectively to
early childhood teachers,
ˇ Ability to think analytically about classroom practice
and teachers' professional development,
ˇ Ability to work as part of a team that includes early
childhood educators and researchers,
ˇ Completion of a doctorate or a credible promise of
completion within the year.
Additional desirable qualities include:
ˇ Ability to write and/or speak Spanish,
ˇ Experience developing curriculum materials or
involvement in distance learning efforts,
ˇ Experience and skill training teachers.
The Center for Children and Families actively seeks to
promote the professional growth of its staff by supporting
continued schooling, encouraging involvement in professional
activities, and striving to assign project-related
responsibilities that build on and stretch the skills of
staff. We will begin reviewing applications as they are
received. Interested candidates should send a letter of
application, a résumé, and names of three references to:
