Now sounds like a very interesting project, Cheryl - good to see the 'F
word' is still alive and well in some pockets of Australia! I had
almost given up hope...
What have you found in your work so far? Are beginning teachers
disciplined in the manner we suspect or do spaces remain for talking
back to power?
BTW, the AEUs recent survey (see report in the most recent issue of
Education Today) of early career teachers indicates that 50% intend on
leaving the profession within the next 10 years. Most respondents cite
student behaviour and poor pay but I wonder how many leave because of
straitjacketing and bullying from colleagues (another experience
recently reported in a survey, incidentally not conducted by a teachers
union).
I'm sure there are other folks interested in this research - have you
published from it yet?
Cheers
Linda

I am a doctoral candidate at The University of Newcastle of Newcastle,
Australia. My supervisor is Professor Jenny Gore (lucky me!). I am in
final stages, studying power relations in teacher induction, through
analysing the early years of teaching experience for a two cohorts of
teacher ed graduates- my own PhD study group and a much larger group who
were part of Prof Gore's research. I am using Foucault's
power/knowledge/discipline ideas alongside Gore's techniques of power to
examine construction of self, teaching quality and relations with
others.... any advice thoughts/ welcome as well!
I might add that unfortunately for us here AERA falls in the middle of
semester next year, so teaching responsibilities will unfortunately need
to take precedence over attendance for 2010.I'd like to keep up contact
with the group though!
regards Cheryl

I am also a doctoral student in West London and will be drawing
Foucault. I am studying South-Asian adolescent girls and their cultural
experiences within the context of the secondary school setting, family
life, social contexts etc... Any advice is welcome.
Kindest regards

I am a doctoral candidate writing my prospectus. In reviewing the
literature, I have encountered several articles of original sources
addressing Foucalt's work. I am looking forward to receiving continued
scholarly interaction on this and other topics! This is GREAT!
