Dear Dr. Graham:

We have a new position opening that I believe members of your SIG, Foucault and Education, would be interested in. The posting is for Chair and Associate Professor in Education Studies, an education foundations program (not a certification program) based in Eugene Lang College, The New School's liberal arts division. We have a wonderful faculty in our small but growing program. If you have a means of distributing the announcement, we would appreciate your sharing this wonderful opportunity!

Best,
Karen

Chair and Associate Professor

Education Studies

Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts

Eugene Lang College the New School for Liberal Arts solicits applications for an Associate Professor, discipline open, and chair of the Education Studies department, beginning in academic year 2010-2011. We are interested in candidates who can support our dynamic program in creating interdisciplinary conceptual linkages between education, broadly conceived, and the social, historical, cultural, and political contexts in which questions of educational development and social transformation arise worldwide.

The Education Studies program, a distinctive and innovative social sciences curriculum that uses education as a locus for understanding larger social and historical concerns, is an integral part of the College’s commitment to cultivate social responsibility and participatory citizenship in the classroom, on the campus, and in the community. Each year, dozens of Lang undergraduates work with New York City children and youth through the Institute for Urban Education as well as on other projects across the University. Promising candidates will demonstrate an ability to contribute to civic engagement initiatives through work across the University and with neighborhood organizations, research collectives, non-profits, and city agencies. Education studies is a growth area of the University and the chair will directly inform, in consultation with the faculty, dean, and other relevant constituencies, development of new programming and institutional collaborations both internal to the University and beyond.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in appropriate field; a record of scholarly research and publication commensurate with tenure expectations; significant teaching experience. Some administrative and leadership experience is desirable. Candidates whose fields of research include immigration and citizenship, human rights, international development, globalization, and governance are particularly welcome.

Responsibilities: Overseeing curriculum planning and development; providing leadership for the Education Studies program; designing and teaching innovative courses in Education Studies at the undergraduate level; coordinating with the Institute for Urban Education and working collaboratively across disciplines and fields to build bridges to other divisions of the University, including, for example, programs in education design and technology and mediated learning environments at Parsons the New School for Design. While the position is primarily dedicated to the undergraduate teaching, opportunities to teach graduate courses are also available. This position is dependent on final budget approval from the Office of the Provost.

Application: Review of applications will begin December 1. 2009 and the position will remain open until filled. Interested candidates should send a cover letter describing experience and qualifications, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy and practice relevant to this position, and a list of references. Do not include additional materials at this time. Application is online at http://careers.newschool.edu/applicants/Central?quickFind=51608.

The New School is committed to a policy of equal opportunity in all its activities and programs, including employment and promotion. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, citizenship status, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, physical handicap, veteran or marital status.
