COMMITTEE ON SCHOLARS OF COLOR IN EDUCATION - 2010 Research-Mentoring
Program and Reception
Dear Early Career Scholars:
As we prepare for the Annual Meeting of the American Educational
Research Association in Denver, the Committee on Scholars of Color in
Education (CSCE) invites you to apply to participate in our
Research-Mentoring Program and Reception. We are inviting early career
scholars, defined as junior faculty members in their first, second, or
third year of their academic positions, as well as post-doctoral
fellows, and junior researchers in non-academic positions.
The event will be held on Monday, May 2, 2010; 6:15 p.m. - 8:15 p.m. at
the Hyatt Regency, Denver / Capitol Ballroom 4.
Overview of Research-Mentoring Event and Program Focus:
At the annual meeting each year, AERA supports this event as an
opportunity for early career scholars and senior scholars to meet face
to face to make research and professional connections and to experience
an evening of stimulating conversation in a comfortable and supportive
setting.
In order to bring together early career and senior scholars with
complementary research interests and better facilitate their connections
around research and research development, this year we are asking early
career applicants to submit the following:
- Brief cover letter including your name, rank, university affiliation,
and brief list of research interests
- Curriculum Vitae (CV) that includes publications, presentations,
teaching, and other relevant research and professional experiences
- Brief abstract (no more than 250 words) describing some research/study
on which you are currently working (this could be a work in progress or
even work you are presenting at the annual meeting). Please include
information to typical of professional research abstracts, e.g.., main
study issue(s) and question(s) of interest, sample, methodology, main
findings or anticipated findings, and summary/conclusion.
Please submit this information to [log in to unmask] by March 20, 2010.
In the subject field, please type the phrase "2010 EARLY CAREER
SCHOLAR."
We will use this submitted information as a basis for inviting groups of
senior scholars/mentors whose interests and expertise most closely link
to the interests of applicants. By matching early career and senior
researchers' scholarly interests, we hope to encourage continued and
sustained contact and support after the conference period. In the past,
many of the matched early career and senior scholars have continued
interactions throughout the subsequent academic year, and a number
continued beyond that period. While we anticipate that senior scholars
will be able to provide invaluable insights around general professional
development issues and concerns relative to being a scholar in general
and those unique to scholars of color, this main intent of the program
is for senior scholars to provide insights, information, strategies, and
feedback that will enhance early career scholars' research development,
conceptually and/or methodologically.
Based on past years, we expect between 100-150 applications; however, we
only can accommodate 35-40. Therefore, while any early career scholar of
color can apply, priority will be given to those not involved in the
program previously in order to maximize opportunities to participate.
The primary criteria for selection will be based on applicants'
submission of all requested information along with the ability of the
committee to match the research interest of early career applicants and
senior scholars. After that, we will select applicants on a first come
first serve basis. Applicants will be notified of selection within the
first week of April, 2010.
2010 CSCE Research-Mentoring Lecture
In addition to providing a context for professional connections among
junior and senior scholars, we are excited to announce the 2010 CSCE
Research-Mentoring Lecturer, Dr. Caroline Turner, who will honor us with
a presentation during the Research-Mentoring Program and Reception. Dr.
Turner is the Lincoln Professor of Policy Leadership and Curriculum at
Arizona State University. Dr. Turner has extensive expertise and
published scholarship focus on access, equity and leadership in higher
education, ethnicity and gender processes among faculty in the academy,
organizational change, and the use of qualitative methods for policy
research. Among Dr. Turner's many honors is her recent receipt of the
2009 Recipient of the AERA Scholars of Color in Education Distinguished
Career Contribution Award as well as 2009 AERA Dr. Carlos J. Vallejo
Memorial Award for Lifetime Scholarship. Dr. Turner is an ideal
selection for our Research-Mentoring Lecture, because she has conducted
research on mentoring, has served as an outstanding mentor for other
scholars, and has received and benefitted from supportive mentoring
throughout her career. She will draw on themes from her scholarship as
well as insights from her own experiences in her presentation.
